So yesterday, was Ignited!. A combine band concert by three schools. Namely, Shuqun, Hougang and Regent Secondary School. Mr Lim YH gave me the opportunity of being the Stage Manager, since it is related to the current course I am pursuing.
The experience was awesome. Though it was a hell lot of work and planning to be done, it was worth it.
On Wednesday, I traveled down to Choa Chu Kang in early morning. Reaching Regent Secondary at around 8.45am. The moment I got there, the three schools were already there.
Waited for a while, and the moment rehearsal started, I springed up into action.
It was kinda tedious and confusing at first but I got the hang of it after some time. There were so many things to remember and give instructions to but writing it all down made everything so much easier.
Rehearsal lasted till 2 pm and I made my way back home via the train.
The next day, I reported at Victoria Concert Hall (VCH) at around 1 pm and it was very messy.
Very very messy.
First, the stage crew got the arrangement for 1st half of the concert all wrong.
Secondly, students from all three schools started pouring in and they were quite clueless on where to go and where to place their instrument casings and belongings. In a jiffy, I allocated them to their respective rooms and got them settled down. It was quite stressful as the three schools were at different location of the concert hall and I was the only one there to bring them to their respective places. So, basically, I was running here and there.
Once I have gotten the three schools place their stuff, Shuqun went on stage. And that is when I remembered the seating arrangement was not correct. So I quickly ran to stage and got it sorted out. It was barely 15 minutes since I got there and my legs were already aching.
Mr Lim came and rehearsed the pieces. At around 3.50pm, he wanted to do the full rehearsal. I felt pressure but I believed that I am able to pull this off. The full rehearsal wasn't that smooth actually because there were still adjustments made to the whole thing.
Ended the full rehearsal at around 6 and it was time for the students' dinner. For me, I had to re-set the stage and adapt to the last minute changes that was made. I barely have time to sit down and eat. So, I gave dinner a miss. Soon, it was 7.20pm.
Gave the stage crew the signal for the first bell and I felt the pressure.
The next thing I know, from all the running and giving back stage instructions via walkie talkies, it soon came to the last encore piece. It went perfectly smooth. No screw ups! Man was I in ultimate joy. Heh.
It was the first time I get to be a Stage Manager for a real event.
Finally, I get to run an event in the kind of industry I see myself in.
If it was not for Mr Lim, I would not have gotten this experience and opportunity.
Thanks.
