Well anyway, please do not panic and start flooding my inbox with messages like "Hey, you alright?" or "Hey, it is gonna be just fine." after seeing the comic strip (more like a comic box) posted above. I am in the right state of mind and I still do know who I am. Whatever it is, I am not depressed. JUST that there are certain issues that I deal with every single day that bothers me so much.
I reckon it is going to be a lengthy and wordy post. So, get your popcorn and soft drinks ready ya?
The above comic, I believe is what every teenager would go through at some stage of their life. And I believe not only teenagers are the only ones seeking identity. So just what is bothering me? Honestly, I am not bothered by what they end up as, but rather I am bothered with the entire process that lead to all of these.
Well, maybe a bit but I suggest that the end of it, it would probably be all too late. No? Alright, for most cases.
When I was much younger, I look up upon many people of which some I know and some I do not. They have changed the way I think and in every possible aspect. Even for people I do not know (ie. Oprah Winfrey), they too have taught me the gift of life, discovering and realising what is in store for us now and the future. The bits and pieces that we should avoid as a young adult.
But what happen if a teenager looks up upon someone who does not bring any point of realisation and instead turning into what would deemed as "trying to be cool"? The keyword, "trying".
I have a word that would relate to all of these and that would be "stereotyping".
As a kid, I watch a lot of television. Each time I see a documentary on pilots. I would jump onto my sofa and use the cushions as the steering wheel. Each time I see a documentary on doctors, I aspire to be one of them. But now, neither do I want to be a pilot nor a doctor.
My point is that kids are constantly inspired and they learn through visuals and it just too bad if they learn it by means of mixing with the not-so-right company. Notice I did not refer it as the "wrong company". Because all are aware of the good and the bad, just that they are either very heavily influenced by their surroundings or are just too afraid to change. Another factor that would contribute is the nature of the person.
So, after the long introduction, let me introduce to you to the actual content. (Hahaha! No, I am serious!)
[I will try my best to keep it all short]
Take a break, sit at any bench along Orchard Road and observe. You would encounter many different types of people.
Barely legal teenagers puffing a stick of cigarette TRYING to be awesomely cool. Seriously, I have seen teenagers who look like they are still in their primary school education puffing like they rule the entire stretch of walkway. Not that I am scrutinising every single thing about them but I find it a huge turn off.
Bad enough that I am against smokers. Even when my Dad takes a puff in the living room, I would tell him to go somewhere else to smoke, like the balcony. Just the other day, I went to Kandahar Street for supper. Shisha (wait till I do an entry on that) is common around that area. Nothing that I am against of BUT the people puffing their way that ticks me off. What I observed was a group of 4-5 teenagers accompanied with a young adult of legal age. What questions me the most is that did they take a puff because they like the feeling (which results have shown that it has the same effect as smoking a cigarette, only worst) or is it because they took a puff because everybody is doing it. From where I am seeing it, they certainly have little knowledge about it and their naivety just makes it much worst.
Me and my family would most of the time have our supper at Kandahar Street, if not Haji Lane, and each time I am there, I recognize the regulars. Sadly, they are actually under aged. The young adult could have at least act responsibly rather than to allow the naivety of the under aged to sink in.
It is especially sad when I know someone, regardless of whether they are close to me or not, smokes. Be it Shisha or the regular cigarette. Not only they are doing harm to their own self but they are just breeding the next generation of smokers. Just what do they benefit from it? Someone, tell me please?
Frankly speaking, I despise under aged kids who smoke.
No matter who they are to me.
There are actually more for me to type out but will not bore you with my lengthy post. I realised that this issue gets on me the most. For other issues, I will type them out along the way. Whenever I have nothing to blog about.
Ciao!
